Chapter Twelve

OMG, that’s amazing.” Issa pressed a hand to her heart. “Caleb, did you hear that?”

The pause lasted three…two…one and then all hell broke loose, the questions surrounding them like a storm.

“Since when have you been together?”

“How are you feeling?”

“Are you a couple?”

“Does Sofia know?”

“Hey, hey.” Becca held up her hands. “Whoa. So, first things first. We aren’t together. And I’m feeling okay, just really sick sometimes, and very hungry for ice cream. We aren’t a couple, we’re good friends. And most importantly, no, Sofia doesn’t know, and I am hoping that it can stay that way until I tell her the news myself.”

“Two grandbabies.” Pauline burst into tears. “I’m so happy that I don’t know what to say. What a day. What a beautiful surprise.”

She went and enfolded both Issa and Becca into her arms.

Caleb nudged Jackson in the ribs. “Just friends?”

Jackson nodded.

“Pretty damn good friends then, huh?” Aaron quipped as Spencer tried to cover up his barking laugh with a cough that failed to fool anyone.

“Um…hey everyone? I need a little help up here,” Abby shouted from the balcony. “Something is burning on the grill.”

“Oh no.” Jackson slapped his forehead. “The burgers.”

He jogged back to the grill to find the patties charred. Swearing under his breath, he looked over at the sausages and breathed a small sigh of relief. At least there would be enough of those to go around and keep everyone fed now that the burgers were a bust.

“Looks like you didn’t have it handled,” Alan said by way of greeting, coming up the stairs.

“Got distracted by Issa’s emergency. But we have enough food to be okay.”

“Thanks to your mother.” Alan’s tone was pointed.

Jackson winced, knowing he wasn’t getting off the hook.

“You’re going to be a father.”

“I am.”

“Do you have even the slightest clue of the responsibility you are taking on?”

Jackson slammed back his shoulders. “You know what, Dad? I don’t. I can imagine, but until I’m in it, no, I don’t think I can truly comprehend it.”

“You’re going to have to take on the company. That’s it. No more dithering. This is bigger than me and you now. This is about providing for the next generation. This is for the future.”

“Dad, I hear you.” Jackson held up one hand. “But I need you to back off a little. Trust me when I say I know I have to figure stuff out.”

“I trusted you to not burn our lunch, and look what happened.” Alan nodded at the pile of burned meat. “It’s not that you can’t do these things, Jackson. Don’t get me wrong. I know you can. But you aren’t willing to stand up and take responsibility. To do the hard thing instead of the fun thing. But you’re a man now, not a boy, and you’re going to be a father, not just a son. I know you think I’m here just busting your chops, but it’s not for my personal entertainment. I want—no, I need to see you be the man that I know you are deep down inside.
