Chapter Twelve
OMG, thatâs amazing.â Issa pressed a hand to her heart. âCaleb, did you hear that?â
The pause lasted threeâ¦twoâ¦one and then all hell broke loose, the questions surrounding them like a storm.
âSince when have you been together?â
âHow are you feeling?â
âAre you a couple?â
âDoes Sofia know?â
âHey, hey.â Becca held up her hands. âWhoa. So, first things first. We arenât together. And Iâm feeling okay, just really sick sometimes, and very hungry for ice cream. We arenât a couple, weâre good friends. And most importantly, no, Sofia doesnât know, and I am hoping that it can stay that way until I tell her the news myself.â
âTwo grandbabies.â Pauline burst into tears. âIâm so happy that I donât know what to say. What a day. What a beautiful surprise.â
She went and enfolded both Issa and Becca into her arms.
Caleb nudged Jackson in the ribs. âJust friends?â
Jackson nodded.
âPretty damn good friends then, huh?â Aaron quipped as Spencer tried to cover up his barking laugh with a cough that failed to fool anyone.
âUmâ¦hey everyone? I need a little help up here,â Abby shouted from the balcony. âSomething is burning on the grill.â
âOh no.â Jackson slapped his forehead. âThe burgers.â
He jogged back to the grill to find the patties charred. Swearing under his breath, he looked over at the sausages and breathed a small sigh of relief. At least there would be enough of those to go around and keep everyone fed now that the burgers were a bust.
âLooks like you didnât have it handled,â Alan said by way of greeting, coming up the stairs.
âGot distracted by Issaâs emergency. But we have enough food to be okay.â
âThanks to your mother.â Alanâs tone was pointed.
Jackson winced, knowing he wasnât getting off the hook.
âYouâre going to be a father.â
âI am.â
âDo you have even the slightest clue of the responsibility you are taking on?â
Jackson slammed back his shoulders. âYou know what, Dad? I donât. I can imagine, but until Iâm in it, no, I donât think I can truly comprehend it.â
âYouâre going to have to take on the company. Thatâs it. No more dithering. This is bigger than me and you now. This is about providing for the next generation. This is for the future.â
âDad, I hear you.â Jackson held up one hand. âBut I need you to back off a little. Trust me when I say I know I have to figure stuff out.â
âI trusted you to not burn our lunch, and look what happened.â Alan nodded at the pile of burned meat. âItâs not that you canât do these things, Jackson. Donât get me wrong. I know you can. But you arenât willing to stand up and take responsibility. To do the hard thing instead of the fun thing. But youâre a man now, not a boy, and youâre going to be a father, not just a son. I know you think Iâm here just busting your chops, but itâs not for my personal entertainment. I wantâno, I need to see you be the man that I know you are deep down inside.
